Finding the Time

Last month I received my copy of RWA's newsletter Heart's Talk, and the theme of the month was finding the time to write. This is something I struggle with daily, as many of us do. So I've been making a more concerted effort this month to get back into a more productive writing schedule.

Right.

I thought the best way to do this would be to get up earlier. 5 am is doable, thought I. That would give me an hour each the morning at least. The trouble is, I keep waking up at 3:30 am and can't get back to sleep until after 4 am, which renders 5 am definitely undoable.

So I've tried writing at night. I got some done one night this week, but other night's results were abysmal. The touble with waiting until the rest of the day is out of the way and everyone under 2 feet tall is asleep, is that my level of concentration depends on the kind of day I've had. Some nights (okay, most nights), the brain is about as useful as a plate full of mashed potato.

So I'm seriously considering the unthinkable. Rising whenever I wake up in the wee hours, whether it be 3:30, 4, 4:30... I haven't been able to bring myself to do it just yet because, come on. I do still have to put in a full day's work either at the office or at home afterward and my strictly rationed daily caffeine allowance only goes so far. Not to mention the fact that such an early wake time would guarantee I'd fall asleep before my latest trash TV favourite show, Cashmere Mafia. I guess that's why they invented video recorders.

On the promo side of things, I've been interviewed by Rachel C of Fallen Angel Reviews. I talk a little in there about finding the time to write as well, and about manuscript hopping, targeting my work etc. I'd love you to go check it out.

Next week I'll let you know how the great alarm clock experiment went.

Cool interview Sami. Must say, my eyes boggled at your phobia - newspapers??? LOL, people are funny. I have a thing about other people's feet. If they touch me with their feet I feel physically ill.

Good luck with the 3:30am effort. I bet, after your eyes clear enough to actually see your screen you'll be amazed by how productive you can be at that time.

The newpaper thing is not so much a phobia as a revulsion. But then, other people's feet don't concern me at all.

I know how hard it is to find time to write with the little one, as you know I've got two, and right now they are both being a huge handful. I know how frustrating it is, how you just want some peace and some me-time. I also know how hard it is to write at night. Lately that's what i've been doing and it takes some concentration to kick-start my brain.

Its so hard to get through all this with toddlers. Most days I long for them to go to school! But, if I can pass on any hard won advice, its that you need BALANCE in your life. Is getting up at 3.30am going to give you that balance or is it just going to reduce you to an exhausted (and probably sick) heap?

Is there anywhere else you can claw half an hour here and there to write? Lean heavily on hubby (right now mine is entertaining the kids for an hour whilst I write), grab time from your Mother-in-law - take it, be selfish. I've found if you make writing your priority then others start to take it more seriously.

Just make sure you don't end up in a heap like I did.

I know Cait, that's exactly what I'm afraid of - driving myself into the ground. It's just that I know I do better when I can get into a regular writing pattern, which as you know is almost impossible to establish when little things keep cropping up.

I fell over yesterday and banged up my knee, so am having a day at home without the Princess to keep it elevated. Am planning to up the word count during recovery, which might save me a few early mornings this week.

      Cheers,

        Oh your poor knee!
Alas when I did my back I was so zonked on painkillers I couldnt string a sentence together. So progess on the WIP has pretty much ground to a standstill. And today is my writing day, but I'm busy trying to get the sty of a house under control, and its gone 1pm already, so I'll have to get dinner on in an hour or so, then the screamies are home so no hope of anything until late tonight.

I did defrag the laptop whilst I was out at the physio tho.

        sigh.

Another one who struggles for time here... in fact right now I should be writing but I'm at that end of the day you wrote about and my eyes are sore, my feet and shoulders ache and my brain is the serve of peas beside your spuds. So many thoughs...none of them really worth pursing.

I'll let ya know if I find a miracle solution.

Off to check out your interview now!

Getting up when you wake naturally is a good idea, but you will probably find it impossible as we approach winter. I know I've had that thought in the middle of the night and dismissed it just as quickly. Perhaps a notebook and a booklight next to the bed so you don't have to sacrifice the warmth.
